Fixed Price vs Time & Material: Which Contract Model Fits Your Project?

Once you have chosen a software development partner, you face the next major hurdle: the contract. The two dominant pricing models in software development are Fixed Price and Time & Material (T&M).
Choosing the wrong model can lead to bloated budgets or paralyzing scope disputes. Here is how to pick the right one for your specific project.
The Fixed Price Model
In a Fixed Price contract, the agency commits to delivering a specific set of features for a specific price, by a specific date.
The Pros:
- Extreme budget predictability. You know exactly what you are paying.
- Low risk for the client; the agency absorbs the cost if they miscalculated the effort.
The Cons:
- Absolutely zero flexibility. If you realize mid-project that users actually want Feature B instead of Feature A, you cannot change it without triggering a painful "Change Request" process and paying more.
- To protect themselves from risk, agencies will add a 20-30% buffer to a Fixed Price quote.
Best For: Small, highly predictable projects like a simple corporate website or a basic 5-screen mobile app where the requirements will definitively not change.
The Time & Material (T&M) Model
In a T&M contract, you pay the agency for the actual hours worked by the development team, usually billed weekly or monthly.
The Pros:
- Ultimate flexibility. You can pivot the product direction instantly based on user feedback.
- You only pay for the exact work done, eliminating the "risk buffer" inflated into Fixed Price quotes.
- It aligns the agency and the client. Instead of fighting over scope definitions, both parties focus purely on building the best product.
The Cons:
- The final budget is variable, which can make CFOs and investors nervous.
Best For: Complex MVPs, SaaS platforms, and enterprise software. In modern Agile development, requirements will change. T&M is the only model that gracefully handles the reality of building complex software.
At Fanya Tech, we offer both models but heavily advocate for T&M for product development, as it ensures our incentives are aligned with building you the best possible software.
